Riverdale Kindergarten celebrated Matariki with an evening concert on Thursday 18 June. Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster known as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters, that rises only once a year. It also signals the start of the Māori New Year and remembering the past, present and future.

As a part of the Enviroschools network, Linton Kindergarten are finding ways to strengthen sustainable practices. A recent rubbish audit at the kindergarten revealed that paper was a large part of generated waste. Two baskets were added to the art area for paper collection. One basket is for reusable paper, and one for recyclable paper.

Keep Feilding Beautiful’s Russell Parker recently presented Feilding Kindergarten with an apple tree, an appropriate prize for the kindergarten’s winning entry into the Manawatu Garden Festival’s school competition. For the South American themed hat display, the kindergarten created a paper mache cactus, adjourned with colourful sombreros.

“I want to be a rock star!” said John, a four year old Milverton Kindergarten child, whose brother plays the ukulele in his school band. Together we made hair to look like ‘head banger’ musicians and created our own band. A pallet became the stage and the karaoke microphone became a tool for the most amazing range of sounds.

Pumpkin Hoedown - Manchester Kindergarten

Pumpkin seedlings, grown by Manchester Kindergarten family and distributed to others families to grow. As the giant pumpkins grew, it was decided a communal weigh in would be a great way to celebrate the Autumn harvest. The kindergarten organised a hoedown dance, which included a sausage sizzle and homemade pumpkin soup and buns.

Keeping the message simple also allowed for families to pick up the conversation at home if the children had more questions.
