Some families and teachers from Manchester Kindergarten had an exciting morning recently when they were part of a large group who got together at Taimoana Park in Feilding for the Ōroua awa hui. The river hui was well attended by various members of the education community.
It is important for us that the local iwi, Ngāti Kauwhata, feel well supported in their attempts to ensure that the river reverts to a clean, sustainable, healthy environment in the future.
After a karanga, where Ngāti Kauwhata welcomed everyone to the hui, karakia and speeches were delivered, waiata were sung and Manchester Kindergarten children used chalk to decorate river rocks as their contribution to the art works.
The kindergarten is working proactively to ensure they take opportunities to support the iwi and make sure the children and their whanau have experiences to increase understanding and knowledge of locally significant issues and have diverse bicultural experiences.
