Indicated by the appearance of the Pleiades constellation, the Māori New Year marks a special time to gather and share. It was under this pretext that West End Kindergarten held a Celebrating You - Our West End Community evening.
Our kindergarten children opened the evening with a Matariki waiata performance. Whānau were also invited to share an aspect of their culture and we were delighted to be entertained by waiata, speeches and a performance of How Maui Slowed the Sun by Dingleberry the Clown, which our tamariki helped to perform.
Whānau were able to explore cultural activities including, Pasifika ink printing, Matariki harakeke star weaving and feather creation for the community korowai. Shared kai and time to kōrero brought the evening to a close.
We would like to thank our community for making this event such a success. It was a pleasure to acknowledge and celebrate our West End Kindergarten Community at this special time of the year - Matariki.
