Awapuni Kindergarten’s new 10-seater diesel Nissan Urvan van means children can now be collected from their homes.
Head teacher Kim Stewart says “the kindergarten is picking up seven children every morning at present. Some are new immigrants still learning how to get around the city; others have no family car, limited finances or live too far away to walk.
For some families, an illness or new baby in the family can make getting to kindergarten a challenge. We will collect them, depending on their needs.
The van had been on the kindergarten’s wish list for years.
I could always see that if we could offer to pick children up, we could guarantee children were getting a good early childhood education service.”
Considerable fundraising was needed to purchase the second-hand van, and then it took three months kitting it out to meet high safety standards.
Now that the van is up and running, Awapuni Kindergarten children can also enjoy regular excursions. A weekly group is attending gymnastics sessions and other trips further afield are being planned.
