Hokowhitu Kindergarten had a beautiful day for a trip to the Esplanade and new Central Energy Wildbase Recovery centre in February. Excursions like this support our Enviroschool journey where we explore relationships between people and the land, form connections with the environment and explore through different cultural eyes.
At Wildbase, we learnt about the meaning of the carvings in the entrance and on the walls which were done by local Rangitāne iwi. We saw a tui, kaka, bellbird and kererū in the walk- through enclosure; brown teal swimming in their pond and looked hard to find the ruru and blue ducks.
Everyone really enjoyed the ride on the Esplanade Scenic Railway train and walk through the native bush. Hunting for all the items on the treasure map kept everyone interested and involved and kai times were a chance to catch up with friends. Of course a trip in a big bus for tamariki is exciting even for a short journey.
