Our tamariki were out and about at Ahimate Reserve, the wet and wild weather never deterred us because we had our amazing wet weather gear on. Lucky for us it was the West End School’s Cross Country Run day and we got to see a few of the races. We were able to say hello to family who were down there for the sports day.
We also got the chance to rediscover some of the natural challenges that are available there such as the muddy slopes and the logs that we could balance on, just to name a few. Challenge/Risk is an essential component of a balanced childhood. Exposure to healthy risk, particularly physical, enables our tamariki to experience fear in a healthy way and learn the strengths and limitations of their own body.
Our children love the game “I spy” so we made cards for them to spot things that might be found in the environment. Back at Kindergarten the interested children were collating the information and counting what was found, great numeracy skills and analysing data.
